Google calls its Google Cloud VMware Engine the “lift and transform cloud.” By offering high-performance, high-availability volumes in 14 regions around the world, Google says it’s easier than ever for enterprises to migrate from on-premises storage to the hybrid cloud.

Google product leader Matt Mendoza spoke to NetApp recently about new multi-zone stretch cluster support, NetApp Cloud Volumes Service (CVS) and Cloud Volumes ONTAP (CVO) partner solutions, and Google’s number-one strength: global networking.

It’s a small world after all

People often joke that Google runs the whole internet. While that’s overstating the case just a bit, the rapid worldwide expansion of Google Cloud can certainly make it seem that way.

As it turns out, co-locating hybrid cloud volumes in, say, North America, Europe, and Australia can be a daunting task. Luckily the partnership between Google, VMware, and NetApp makes it possible to create a single virtual private cloud (VPC) capable of controlling everything, regardless of region.

Mendoza says Google’s Global VPC allows IT managers to turn up VMware engines in up to 14 regions around the world and have them communicate with each other immediately with no network configuration.

The benefit of such a system to partners and their customers may prove invaluable. A worldwide network of high-performance nodes with extremely low latency can power some of the world’s most arduous virtual tasks including big-query, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML).

Easier migration, lower costs

Google Cloud features NetApp Cloud Volumes Service (CVS) in 10 regions around the world. The ever-expanding network includes multiple locations in Europe, Asia and the Americas.

CVS hastens the deployment of cloud-based apps and allows users to mount cloud volumes from within the guest OS of their VMware virtual machines. Google also offers Cloud Volumes ONTAP (CVO) an industry-leading cloud data management solution built on NetApp’s ONTAP storage software.

The potent combination of these technologies could make it faster, more efficient and less costly for enterprises to migrate from on-premises storage to the cloud. That’s a value prop any CIO could love.
